Frequently Asked Questions
Not harder — just structured differently. Hybrid courses cover the same learning outcomes, content, and academic rigor as our fully online and traditional formats, and they earn the same accredited degree. What changes is how you experience the material. Hybrid blends the flexibility of online learning with the connection and accountability of in-person sessions, which many students find actually makes the workload more manageable. You get face-to-face time with faculty and classmates while still having the freedom to complete much of your coursework on your own schedule.
Hybrid learning is a strong fit if you:
· Want flexibility to balance school with work, family, or military obligations, but still value some in-person interaction
· Learn better with a mix of independent study and live discussion
· Live near one of our campuses (San Diego or San Jose) and can attend scheduled in-person sessions
· Appreciate networking and building relationships with faculty and peers face-to-face
· Want the discipline of a regular class meeting to help keep you on pace
If you need full geographic flexibility or travel often, our 100% online option may suit you better. Both formats l
A typical hybrid course at CalMU runs in eight-week sessions and combines:
· One weekly in-person class meeting (usually afternoon, evenings, or Saturday mornings) at our San Diego or San Jose site for lecture, discussion, group work, and direct interaction with your professor
· Online coursework through Moodle, including readings, recorded materials, assignments, discussion forums, and collaborative projects you complete on your own schedule
· Proctored midterm and final exams, as required for all CalMU courses
· 24/7 access to support resources, including our online library, AI-powered tutoring, and faculty office hours
Most students take one or two courses at a time, depending on their goals and availability.
Yes! We have strong evidence and student experience to back it up. Hybrid learning combines the best of both worlds: the flexibility and self-paced reflection of online study with the engagement, accountability, and relationship-building of in-person instruction. Research consistently shows hybrid students perform as well as or better than students in single-modality formats, particularly when courses are designed intentionally for blended delivery, as ours are. At CalMU, our low student-to-faculty ratio means you get personalized attention in both modes, and our practitioner faculty bring real-world industry experience directly into the classroom.
